We’ve all been there at one time or another. That awkward moment when you’re in full conversational flow and then the next thing you hear is three very faint beeps in your ear. The conversation abruptly ended as the mobile signal gives way right before cursing at your handset manufacturer or network provider begins.

But have you ever spared a thought for the causes of bad mobile phone reception. What is it that blocks the signal from your network provider getting through to your handset? Read on to find out the common causes of poor mobile phone signal.

1. Building Construction Material.

We all know of at least one indoor place where getting a decent mobile phone signal is somewhat of a chore. For some, it may be a friend’s house whereas for others it may be a shopping mall or a church. But what is it about particular properties that hamper the signal strength of your mobile phone?

More often than not it is down to the materials used to construct a building, rather than where the building itself is located. Extremely dense materials such as concrete and lead can prove very problematic for mobile network providers trying to beam signal to indoor users.

2. Building Size

The size of a building can have just as much impact on mobile signal quality as the materials used to construct it. You will often find desirable signal strength hard to come by in large indoor areas such as hospitals, colleges and factories. This is because the signal has to not only work through the exterior surface (walls) but once inside it has many features to content with before reaching your device.

3. Rural Areas

Unfortunately for those people residing in quieter, rural locations mobile phone network providers are not always convinced of the commercial viability of installing mobile phone masts aimed at improving network signal in such areas. It can be quite costly for a network provider to build a new tower and this will not necessarily mean more custom (from that area) which will usually mean people living ‘out in the sticks’ have to suffer where mobile phone reception is concerned.

4. Multipath Interference

Ever wondered why strong reception is hard to come by in that particular city centre street? It can’t be any of the above reasons because your outside and most certainly not in a rural area.

The trouble with city centre locations is that there are so many signals being transmitted in such a densely populated area that some interference is bound to occur. What actually happens is that two (or more) signals will destructively interfere with one another – resulting in either no signal at all or a very poor reception on both signals.

Points one through to four listed above can be combated quite easily in today’s age. Search online for a device called a mobile signal booster and you will see that for a very reasonable one-off fee you can purchase a cellular repeater cable of boosting the network signal in your area. In most instances these devices are compact and can installed easily without the need for an engineer.

Car drivers across the UK will be gifted thousands of pounds, disguised as parking fines, today as teams of phoney traffic wardens take to the streets in a countrywide stunt being pulled by T-Mobile.

Famous for featuring unsuspecting members of the public in its TV ads, T-Mobile is turning its attention to motorists and traffic wardens to give them an unexpected surprise in the stunt. Teams of actors and comedians, dressed as traffic wardens, have been employed by the leading mobile communications brand to place reverse-fines on hundreds of legally parked cars across England, Scotland and Wales.

Streets and car parks around the country have been rigged with hidden cameras to capture the reactions of unsuspecting drivers returning to their cars. Millions of people are expected to witness the funniest reactions when they are featured in a new TV ad airing this Friday night at 9.15pm on Channel 5.

In a twist to be captured by the cameras, the imitation parking tickets will, instead of a fine, contain a £5, £10, £20 or £50 note and a good day message from T-Mobile in celebration of the launch of the new You Fix plan. The brand will be giving away thousands of pounds throughout the course of today as it films its Parking Ticket advert.

Drivers parking in and around the surrounding areas of Newcastle, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Bristol, Brighton, Birmingham and Manchester are expected to be most likely to receive the special fines. Over £300 million has already been handed out by traffic wardens across the UK in the last 12 months, with these regions some of the worst hit in the UK.

In this video, some of the useful functions of LG’s new Optimus One smartphone are shown off. In the words of Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company: ”The LG Optimus Series is aimed at challenging the notion that one device can meet the needs of many,”

“At LG, we believe in providing people with many different choices because our customers are not all alike. We want to provide devices that suit all needs and simplify people’s lives” said Ahn.

In this treasure hunting video, we can see the Optimus One’s camera, image search, navigation and augmented reality applications. Judging by the One’s specifications and looks, it seems LG are certainly trying to make this a smartphone for both the technology and style-conscious.
The handset carries a 600MHz chip, 3.2-inch 320 x 480 LCD capacitive touchscreen, and the usual wireless package (802.11b/g WiFi, A-GPS, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and FM radio). Although perhaps not as cutting-edge as some of the high-end smartphones, it’s clear LG have focused on usability and fitting the right technology, for the right price. With the Optimus One, it’s fair to say LG are definitely at the Smartphone party – but can they challenge the likes of Apple, HTC, Nokia and Samsung?

In this latest video from Nokia, you can see how people are really getting creative with the N8 handset. From hamster-powered phone chargers to a device that actually scores your real-life skateboard tricks as you pull them off, there really are some great ideas!

One feature of the N8 that allows a multitude of applications has to be the high definition camera. With a large 12 MP sensor and Carl Zeiss optics you can capture great images. The Xenon flash allows you to take good pictures in low-light conditions as well. Also there’s plenty of room to store pictures and video with reams of internal storage and a high end media player.

The N8 is the first Nokia handset to use Symbian^3 – the latest version of the open source OS. Symbian^3 has been created with touch screens in mind and supports gestures such as multi touch, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. Symbian^3 also promises better memory management for faster multi-tasking, which is great news for another reason: the general day to day UI should be a much more pleasant experience to use, which has been something of a criticism labelled at the high end phones like the N97 and N97 mini.

Find out more about the projects and the brilliant people behind the innovative uses for the N8 at nokia.com/nseries or pre order yours at www.nokia.com/n8

We tend to look at how much the World has changed since the information age brought on fast and increasingly faster computers, along with fast and increasingly faster internet connections. I guess with all the fast changes going along in the world of computing and computer peripherals, we neglect other changes going on in other day to day objects. Televisions are becoming sharper and with much better image quality, as well as lighter and offering a world of different functions. Kitchen appliances, like refrigerators, for example, have become smarter with the use of chips and can now perform more complex functions, like advanced energy saving or even letting you know when you’re low on a given food product. Cars are also getting a whole lot smarter. What used to be a fully mechanical system is now being increasingly replaced by an electronic smart system tied to its own on board computer that can improve fuel economy, monitor the car for any problems or safety issues and increase efficiency.

But one of the objects that has changed the most is the telephone. It’s almost comical now to look at the old rotary disk phones and think that people talked to an operator instead of just dialing the number. How could you trust that you could make that business call on time, let alone conduct a conference call back then? With the improvement of land lines and of telephone technology, especially with the introduction of the digital telephone, things started going along a lot more smoothly. And of course, the mobile telephone was the ultimate invention when it comes to the world of business and otherwise too. Having the option of being within reach at all times in the day, wherever you are, is one of the most beautiful things to have happened to the busy business man that has to be on call at all times.

But now cell phones have taken yet another leap. Smart phones, like Blackberries and the iPhone allow you to turn your phone into a multi functional tool that allows you to do a lot of things. One of the most impressive functionalities that I found for the iPhone was a teleconference application. To think that a little phone that fits in your pocket can replace an entire teleconference call center in that it schedules the calls, makes them and connects all the people in the call, while at times also allowing for video conference, kind of still blows my mind.
